A dream is a powerful tool that focuses our intellectual, physicaland spiritual skills, and aligns our actions with our purpose.
Even though his record has been broken several times, Babe Ruth is still remembered as the greatest home run hitter of all time. His most celebrated home run was in the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs when the Babe stood at home plate, looked up at the fans, and pointed to the right center field stands. Everyone in the stadium knew what he meant, and they cheered wildly when he hit the ball into the spot where he had pointed. Did the Babe dream that home run, or was it a prediction of the future based on self-confidence? Is there a difference? The dreams we have for the future are our prediction of life's coming attractions. Most things in our world have been created twice. First in someone=s mind, in his or her dreams; and second in physical reality. We create the future by imagining what our lives could be like, and then taking action to make it so.
You and I are stars in the exciting adventure called life. The adventure offers a wide choice of roles, some big and some small. We get to choose our role, and work to make it real. Unfortunately, if we do not choose a dream for our life, we risk becoming merely a pawn in someone else=s dream. If we let them, the twin dragons of fear and embarrassment will stop us from dreaming. They will frighten us into believing that dreams never come true, or delude us into thinking that we will be criticized for an unrealistic dream. Those dragons also may cause us to be embarrassed to declare that our dream is to help and support others.
It may seem easier not to dream at all. But we need a dream to keep from being frustrated by the little failures that happen almost every day. Dreams are our ticket out of the boredom of everyday activities and recurring problems. Lack of a dream leaves us depressed, wondering why we are alive. Dreams are a visualization, a mental image of who we are and what we want. Dreams become the criteria for making choices as we play our chosen role in the adventure of life. What better time to dare new dreams then at the start of the 21st century and a new millennia. |
